Just out of interest here is a story. In about 1996 I was involved in a
project with the Optus system which was very new at the time. The network
engineers were all ex Telstra which was for a long time the govt controlled
monopoly.  They told me that at senior meetings inside Telstra - when the
specs for the new mobile service were finalised they  had the options to
allow text messaging or to disallow by default for all users. Apparently
they tortured themselves over this issue and most of the senior staff
couldn't think of any reason why someone would send a text message instead
of just ringing and leaving voice mail. They decided to turn it on by
default - not expecting much use. They put a stupid charge per message - I
think it was 25 cents!!!!!
