I think the original question was for POP, and didn't SMTP.  Can you do machine auth for POP3 I wonder now?

hi Wayne:

you should be able to get away with the ’trusted machine’ aspect of emailing and office.       there are tons of legacy photocopiers (etc) out there that can email a PDF of what you were trying to copy to an email account — and they are not about to do anything complex to authenticate to mail servers.

considering a server as a trusted machine can use that.

Microsoft and gMail prefer that there are real humans at the end of an email that can do two factor authentication —  but that is not always the case.


and/or, you can  go the whole route and use oauth2 .
