The one thing I would *not* do is give up on smartlists !

Once you have it working it makes coding ***so easy***…...

There will be an answer and it’ll probably be something stupid that we will al kick ourselves about - like I have said before the essence of what smart lists do is not complicated - maybe try a manual delete/update/insert just to make sure your data is ok first and then add the smartlist side once you know your basics are working ???
