ODB via VPN

Hi,

This suggestion is probably out in left field, but I've been frustrated more than once by it when testing cross platform with the same Dev kit. Are you perchance trying to connect to the ODB using the same serial number as a session that's already connected? Since you're running 6.x, the ODB won't tell you that's the issue in the messages.txt file, it just simply drops the connection attempt (duplicate connection attempts in 10.2 WILL note the problem in the messages.txt file) leaving you to wonder just what is wrong. Multi-user serial numbers are handled a little differently I think. I think they might let you know you've exceeded the limit, I don't have any multi user serial numbers to test with so I can't tell you for sure how it will react. But for a normal "runtime" serial number that tries to connect more than once, you'll have a silent drop of any subsequent connection attempt from another IP address.

Otherwise, you're correct in that the remote client should be able to connect to the ODB as the whole point of a VPN is to look like you're on the local network.

Lastly, I'd suggest, as others have, to use some kind of remote screen viewing solution like RDC, VNC, or TeamViewer as then you can have the benefit of your client's application actually being on the same network as the datafiles, otherwise you'll see performance issues with the app when connected to the ODB across the internet, unless maybe both ends have 100Mbs internet, then it might be reasonable, but even that could not compete on performance with an RDC type solution. The RDC or screen sharing type solution will work well, once setup for the remote clients to connect - which can be via VPN.

Regards,

Joe Maus
