Can a Mac be a full blown web server?

Hello Das,
I feel another journey for you; have you packed your toothbrush?
In simple terms, yes you can use a Mac:
1 You can use the built in Apache service
2 You can let Omnis be the server
3 You can open this Mac to WHOLE wide HUGE world on the internet.
And this is quite easy, with a bit of network port redirection on your router to your Mac, ie, open port 80 and direct it to the IP of your Mac on your office network. Then when outside users enter your public/visible/exposed IP address, their request will be directed to your Mac, and it will respond with the service you setup.
If you want to serve ultra thin clients, ie, no Omnis type of data, just Omnis generated HTML data, then away you go. Omnis will listen and respond, with coding.
You could use the Java Script server on any port, and start serving JS web forms generated by the Mac. With coding.
BUT, don’t. Well, not for more than a few minutes. You will have enquiring systems looking to gain a foothold, etc.
You will need to learn a lot more about security, a lot. So my advice is to try one of those methods first, but stick to just using your internal network first, don’t go outside. So choose how you re going to serve those users. Others in this list are far better at this than I, and they might help you choose your method, but slow down and think first please.
Did I say slow down and think first, before you reply? You though Notarisation was hard, well here comes another 'Gert big learning curve. :)
Mike

Hello All,
I got my App Server licenses.. and I’m beginning the process of setting it up.
Right away I come to “What machine will I serve with”
I have Macintosh computers.. they can run Windows if I want to in a VM
I know that many of you use Windows and IIS.. does that have ongoing fees?
I wanted to set up my server on my Mac if possible. But I started researching installing Apache and I’m hitting this:
Most of the instructions are for setting up test or local web servers with Apache.. and one says dont use it as a full blown web server whatever that means..
I thought I had heard that a Mac can be a Web Server.. is it true? What’s my chances of finding help in setting it up?
Or am I better off going with Windows? And IIS… ???
Do you HAVE TO host a website yourself to run the App Server? Or could you just have the web server running and a SSL certificate installed.. I really dont know what I’m doing yet.
Thanks,
Das Goravani
