Omnis App Server Related Questions

This was sent to UK Sales.. I await their answers.. but I thought I would ask here as well.. the illumination may differ tween the two.. thank you.

I realize the App Server is a contentious product.. for me, for my purposes, and in my case, the Omnis App Server makes GREAT SENSE.. when you know my case fully.. and my needs.. it makes PERFECT sense.. and from what I know so far it will do what I want.. this is me checking and learning some more things that are related.

1. One can, using the App Server, serve simple JS Remote Forms on JUST a web browser.. no download first.. is this correct?

Said another way.. if I make rather simple data entry JS Remote Forms in Omnis, I can serve those to the WORLD using the App Server.. and the user’s need only use their Web Browser to run the forms… correct?

2. And I can call the forms from a regular web page.. so at first my users are on regular web pages on my site.. and they click a button.. I can make that button URL be the URL that launches a JS remote form I have made in Omnis correct? This is basic I think.. Can I go back the other way easily.. from remote form back to regular web pages..

3. I do NOT need the wrapper.. that is for making independently walking apps for phones for example.. so that the App lives on the phone or iPad whereas when we serve forms the app lives on the server.. is this correct thinking?

4. I do not need a “thin client”.. by the way WHAT IS the thin client.. when is it needed.. is it a runtime of Omnis? But “thin”.. lean feature set?

5. The Mobile App Server as opposed to the Web App Server is REALLY just a matter of licensing.. it’s the SAME PRODUCT.. WHICH can be called the Omnis App Server.. is this correct?

6. Bruno told me that to serve from a Mac I would need apache.. may I ask, why do I need it.. I once tested the Omnis Server on a Mac and it served without apache.. I was in serve test mode.. it served a JS remote form in my phones browser just fine.. without apache.. why do I need apache if I use a Mac as Omnis Server Machine?

Do you NOT need it on Windows? What VERSION of Windows do you need to NOT need Apache too?

7. Or you can serve with Linux.. what is the benefit of using Linux.. is it faster.. is that why to go with Linux servers.. speed.. or is it the integration of other services.. or both..

What is the “Headless Server”.. what does that mean? I know it’s only on Linux.. is it just the Omnis server but in another configuration.. ?

To take advantage of the coming multi core capability in 10.2.. does one have to be using Linux? And this mainly simply is a speed increase correct? The multi core is for handling more users and having more speed correct?

Is a good windows machine just as fast as a Linux installation.. you see I dont know Linux.. and would have to learn it.. Windows is somewhat familiar and seems like it would be easier to get going.. and maybe switch to Linux later when my site becomes more popular.. right thinking?

8. How basically, does one link regular web pages to Omnis.. as opposed to using remote forms.. you can use regular web pages and interact with Omnis I’ve gathered.. HOW does one do that in the web pages.. is it always just a matter of calling URLS that launch methods.. does the server read incoming URLS and parse them to being method calls? This may become very clear once I get the product and watch videos I’ve heard you have for the App Server.. I haven’t watched yet.. I’m curious if you can actually have REGULAR WEB PAGES that have fields on them that are tied to Omnis.. buttons that tie to Omnis.. so that you can do it all through regular pages as opposed to remote forms.. is that possible.. ? I was told by Doug Easterbrook to do it all through regular pages not remote forms.. that it’s too hard to make remote forms for all devices.. whereas responsive web design pages exist in plenty and work on all devices due to being responsive to the core.. I’ve done a lot of responsive web programming for my main sites.. I used RapidWeaver because it does responsive web pages well.. I will use it as the web site tool around my server projects..
