Mac: which version matches best

So, on Mac 10.6.8, I installed Studio 5.2.3, and pretty much everything appears to be running just fine, with only one significant issue still to be resolved (how to download a jpg from the internet, and convert it to a format which can be displayed in a picture field.).

Next, I should upgrade the Mac.

So, my question is multi-part.

If I stay with 5.2.3, should I upgrade all the way to El Capitan, or stop at Yosemite?  Does 5.2 play better with either of these OS's?

Or, should I upgrade to El Capitan or Yosemite, and also upgrade to 6.1?  Are there significant adjustments between 5 and 6?

Bearing in mind, this is no SQL, just native data file interactions.
