report procedure

Hi all,

I have this in a report field

If JOB_TYPE_NO_14=3
Calculate DESCRIPTION_15 as mid(DESCRIPTION_15,1,44)
end if

It seems like it operates after the field is printed.  How can I get it to operate before the field is printed ?  I know I can put a hidden field before this one and it seems to work,  but is there a better way ?
