Not sure if you've got this working yet - just in case - I use the following
when reading/writing non-unicode text files in O$5.2.

Do iFileOps.$openfile(iFileName) Returns FileOpened Do
iFileOps.$readcharacter(kUniTypeUTF8,iOptionsText)

Do iFileOps.$writecharacter(kUniTypeUTF8,iOptionsText)
Do iFileOps.$closefile(iFileName)
