non local access to df1 datafile

Do any of you have a client user who is accessing a df1 datafile from outside the local network of the server?
If so, what type of data connection is used between the server and the user?
Point to point?  VPN?

Is there a certain minimum latency that is required for usable access?
Minimum bandwidth?
